Utes Stay Perfect in Wac With Sweep of Utep

EL PASO, Texas -- Utah remained undefeated in Western Athletic Conference play with a sweep of UTEP on Saturday at Memorial Gym.

The Utes (11-3, 2-0 WAC) set the tone for the match in the first game with a dominant 15-7 win. Utah outhit UTEP (9-3, 0-2 WAC) .313 to -.222 in the first game.

The Miners lost the second game, despite playing the Utes tough, 15-13. Utah closed out the match with a 15-7 win in the third game.

With the win, Utah has now won 10 consecutive matches, which is one win shy of the longest winning streak in school history.

Brenda Barton-Whicker led Utah with 14 kills, nine digs and a .310 hitting percentage. Kalani Tonga had 12 kills, a .478 hitting percentage, seven digs and four blocks. Sara Shakula posted nine kills, a .381 attack percentage and four service aces. Setter Graciela Torres had a match-high 38 assists. Andrea Tate led UTEP with 13 kills. Catherine Porter had nine kills and 11 digs. Utah outhit UTEP .297 to .140.

The Utes continue WAC play next Thursday against Wyoming at Crimson Court.
