MOSCOW, Idaho - Led by 19 kills from Brenda Barton-Whicker, the Utah volleyball team notched its first win of the season on Wednesday night at Idaho, 8-15, 15-6, 15-7, 15-13.

Barton-Whicker hit .300 for the match with 13 digs. Junior Sara Shakula had 17 kills. Stacie Greenwalt had 13 kills in 23 attempts and hit .478. Utah's freshmen stepped forward, with Salt Lake native Jen Snow getting a match-high 15 digs and Kalani Tonga recording 11 kills and four blocks. Graciela Torres had 55 assists for the Utes. Jamie Young, who missed the first match of the season against Colorado last Saturday with a broken nose, returned to the rotation as a back row player and had nine digs.

Jessica Moore led Idaho with 15 kills and 12 digs. It was just the third loss in 49 home matches for the Vandals in front of over 1,000 fans.

The Vandals (1-3) dominated the Utes (1-1) in the first game, with the home team hitting .268 while Utah committed 10 errors to 17 kills. However, Utah bounced back to take the next three games. The Utes hit .429 in the third game and recorded 22 kills. Utah outhit Idaho .256 to .171 in the match.

"It was a barnburner of a match," said Ute head coach Beth Launiere. "It was a very hostile environment, and I thought that we kept our composure pretty well in spite of the rough start."

Utah competes in the Spokane Spikeoff this weekend in Spokane, Wash. The Utes face No. 6 Washington State on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and No. 20 Notre Dame on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
