SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Athletics department invites all fans to come out and get a preview of the 2014 Utah Volleyball team, which will be conducting its first intrasquad scrimmage inside Crimson Court this Saturday, Aug. 16. First serve for the scrimmage is set for 3 p.m. and admission is free for all fans.
The Utes have been participating in fall camp for the past seven days and head coach Beth Launiere feels that her squad is right where it needs to be heading into tomorrow's first scrimmage of the season.
"I think we are in good shape heading into tomorrow," said Launiere. "We have managed to keep injuries relatively low and we have accomplished a lot. We have been able to get through our playbook where we can start to refine and dial into our system. We still have a lot left to get through, but everyone seems to be getting up to speed picking up the system."
For fans coming to the scrimmage, doors will open at 2:30 p.m. Fans attending the scrimmage may park in the lot just north of the HPER East building (Lot 24).
"The players are really going hard this week and they have been giving us a great effort, so I know that they will be fired up to play tomorrow," said Launiere. It gives them a different feel, so that is why we do two or three of these before the season. We want to put them in different situations as we head toward the regular season, putting them in pressure situations and competitive standpoints, which is the idea of these scrimmages."
The Utes open the 2014 season at home, Friday, Aug. 29, hosting Montana State as part of the Utah Classic. First serve for that match is set for 7 p.m. The team will then close out the tournament against Missouri State (10 a.m.) and New Mexico State (7 p.m.) on Saturday, Aug. 30.
