The University of Utah volleyball team will head to the Golden State for a pair of matches this week. The Utes briefly go out of conference play for a road match at No. 23 San Diego Thursday at 7 p.m. PT in Jenny Craig Pavilion. Utah returns to Mountain West Conference competition Saturday at San Diego State. First serve from Peterson Gym is set for 7 p.m. PT.
Deseret First Duel Review: Utah swept BYU (25-16, 25-21, 25-18) Friday in the first match of the Deseret First Duel at Smith Fieldhouse. Utah has not lost to BYU since Nov. 7, 2007 and has taken 13 of the last 16 matchups against the Cougars since 2003. The Utes outhit the Cougars .362 to .194 and had a 43-29 lead in digs.
Odale Anchors Ute Attack: Utah freshman Morgan Odale (Star, Idaho) registered 19 kills on 42 swings with only three errors for a .381 hitting percentage to lead Utah Friday at BYU. She also had eight digs and two blocks. Odale's 19 kills in a single three-set match is the most by any MWC player this season.
Karolina Nears 1,000-Kill Club: Karolina Bartkowiak (Aurora, Ill.) now has 927 career kills and is only 73 shy of becoming the 12th member of Utah's 1,000-kill club.
Seeing Redd: Freshman middle blocker Erin Redd (Spanish Fork, Utah) has a .350 hitting percentage, which is the second-highest overall mark in the MWC. Redd ranks fourth in the conference-only statistics with a .391 clip after three matches.
Friday against BYU, Redd needed only 12 attempts to record seven kills and committed just one error for a .500 hitting percentage. She also served a team-high three aces.
