SALT LAKE CITY -- University of Utah volleyball head coach Beth Launiere has announced the signing of two student-athletes to national letters-of-intent this afternoon.

Joining the Utes for the fall of 2007 are middle blocker Karolina Bartkowiak (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora HS) and outside/rightside hitter Jennifer Lanting (Corcoran, Calif./ Central Valley Christian HS).

"We've brought in two players who will add to this team both on and off the court," said Launiere. "Not only are they both good volleyball players, but they are high-character people and that's an element that we look for when we bring people into our program."

Below is a thumbnail sketch of each signee:

Karolina Bartkowiak
6-2, Middle Blocker
Aurora, Ill./West Aurora HS

Launiere on Bartkowiak: "Karolina has a lot of natural athleticism and her strength is the ability to hit the slide. She will also bring tremendous work ethic to this team. We feel fortunate to have Karolina join our program. Her mother brought her here from Poland to seek better opportunities, and we feel honored to provide her with that."

Three-year varsity team member ... three-time all-conference and two-time all-area honoree ... played all four years of club ball for Kane County Juniors ... three-time club team MVP ... helped club team win Asics Championship in Chicago and to second-place finish at the East Coast Championships in 2005-06 ... honor roll student and National Honor Society member.

Jennifer Lanting
6-6, Outside/Rightside Hitter
Corcoran, Calif./ Central Valley Christian HS

Launiere on Lanting: "Jennifer's size is obviously her biggest advantage but we feel she is also a good volleyball player. She hasn't played volleyball that long but we saw a lot of natural athleticism in her. We believe that she can be molded into a great volleyball player for us."

Team won valley title in 2004, league title in 2005 ... named second-team all-league in 2005 ... also lettered in basketball ... 2005 basketball team also won league title.
