STANFORD, Calif. - RV/No. 23 Utah allowed a pair of early goals and fell at No. 3/4 Stanford this afternoon, 2-0
"I'm proud of the way we competed today," head coach Rich Manning said. "Stanford is an excellent team and they came out with tremendous energy. Even though we conceded a couple goals, we kept plugging away.Â
We played a tremendous second half and several people contributed to the cause. So we are going to grow from this, get home and prepare for another great Pac-12 weekend."
Kyra Carusa and Michelle Xiao scored seven minutes apart in the first half to pace the Cardinal who moved to 14-1-1 on the season. Utah suffered its first Pac-12 defeat of the year and fell to 10-3-3 overall.
July Mathias made a stop on Megan Turner in the second minute of the contest and Utah countered when Aleea Gwerder forced an early save from Jane Campbell. Carusa headed home the first goal in the 21st minute and after Mathias denied Turner again, Xiao fired one into the top left corner for a 2-0 lead.
Katie Rogers was the second Ute to test Campbell when her header was held in the 29th minute but that was all the offense the Utes could muster in the first half.
In the second half, Haily Skolmoski almost brought Utah back in the game but was just wide off a corner kick in the 54th minute. Campbell stopped the sophomore striker again in the 61st minute, creating another corner kick opportunity. Natalee Wells fired her try in the box and Rogers headed wide.
Skolmoski had two more chances to get on the ledger, but went wide in the 72nd minute and was stopped by Campbell in the 82nd minute.
Utah plays its final two home games of the season next weekend. The Utes host No. 5 USC on Thursday at 7 p.m. for the annual Blackout game and then welcome No. 12 UCLA on Sunday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
