Skolmoski, Flom and Turang score for Utes
FARGO, N.D. - Utah Soccer received goals from Hailey Skolmoski, Max Flom and Cabria Turang during a 3-1 victory at North Dakota State on Sunday afternoon.
"We encountered some difficult conditions on this road trip and we didn't play our best in the first half, but I'm proud of the persistence and aggressiveness we showed in the second half," head coach Rich Manning said.Â
After having their game canceled on Friday evening at Purdue due to harsh weather conditions, things did not start well for the Utes as NDSU's Lizzie Lukas scored in the second minute to give the Bison a 1-0 lead.
In the 11th minute, Taylor Slattery tested NDSU goalkeeper Monica Polgar and Utah continued to attack the Bison backline. The persistence paid off when Skolmoski equalized in the 15th minute off a cross from Holly Daugirda. It was the sophomore's fifth goal of the season, the most by a Ute in a season since 2013, matching Katie Taylor and Allie Wisner's totals.
"I think we are doing some good things offensively and Hailey is doing what needs to be done up front by a center forward," Manning stated. "she's getting in good positions, she's being aggressive and she is constantly looking for scoring opportunities."
Utah had eight shots in the first half, doubling NDSU's total and looked to maintain the momentum entering the second half. After just a minute of play in the second stanza, Haylee Cacciacarne had a ball cleared off the line and Skolmoski hit the post two minutes later.
In the 51st minute, Natalie Vukic tested Polgar but the NDSU keeper made the stop and for the next 20 minutes play went back-and-forth. Skolmoski had another chance to put Utah in front but she was denied in the 72nd minute.
In the 74th minute, Skolmoski crossed the ball in and Max Flom popped up with her first goal of the season to edge Utah ahead 2-1. Eight minutes later, Cabria Turang added an insurance goal, her first as a Ute to provide the final score. Skolmoski provided the assist, giving her four points in the contest and 12 on the season.
"Today was a game where everyone got a chance and we put forth a really good team effort," Manning added. "A lot of people came in and stepped up for us today. It was really great to see Cab and Max put the ball in the net."
Utah is unbeaten in 22 games, a streak that dates back to 2008, when it scores a pair of goals on the road.
Utah is back in action on Friday evening when it travels to Orem for a contest at Utah Valley. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT
