Cougars use pair of homers to win rivalry game
PROVO - No. 11 Utah Softball suffered a 4-3 setback at BYU this evening in the 2017 Deseret Duel. This was the third straight one-run game played between the rivals and this year's encounter was full of drama.
Things started well for the Utes as they broke through in the second inning. With two outs, BreOnna Castaneda legged out a bunt to keep the threat alive.
The gamble paid off as Bridget Castro took the next pitch into right-center for a RBI triple that eluded a pair of BYU fielders. It was the first extra base-hit of the season allowed by BYU pitcher McKenna Bull
In the bottom half, Alexa Strid doubled with one out but a pair of nice defensive plays by Anissa Urtez kept the Cougars off the board.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Lexi Tarrow lined one back to the circle that glanced off Viramontes. That would be it for the junior who was lifted for Katie Donovan. The change helped the Cougars as Libby Sugg homered to give them a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth, Heather Bowen singled and Ally Dickman walked to put the Utes in business. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position but a strikeout and foul out ended the Utah threat.
Delilah Pacheco reached via a fielder's choice in the fifth before Alyssa Barrera and Hannah Flippen reached via singles. Â Urtez lifted a fly to left and Rylee Jensen made a diving catch to limit the damage but Pacheco scored on the sacrifice to tie the score.
Then, Bowen delivered with a single up the middle to put the Utes back in front, 3-2.
In the bottom half of the frame, Lauren Bell singled with one out and moved to second when she avoided a tag by Flippen on a grounder to the second baseman. It proved costly as Sugg smashed her second homer of the game to push BYU ahead 4-3. It was also her third in two games against the Utes.
In the top of the sixth, Castro was plunked to start. After a BYU error, Bella Secaira bunted to put both runners in scoring position. A walk to Barrera loaded the bases but a strikeout and grounder to short killed off any Utah hopes.
Bull earned the win, improving to 14-2 and throwing 162 pitches. Donovan was saddled with the loss, falling to 11-5 after giving up three runs in 3 1/3 innings. Viramontes gave up just the one run over 2 2/3 innings pitched.
Four of Utah's five losses this season have been by one run
