Martin Bergström and head Nordic coach
Abi Holt have been named as recipients of United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association (USCSCA) National Skiers and Coaches of the Year awards.
Bergström, who also earned RMISA men's Nordic Athlete of the Year honors and was named the Fasterskier men's Collegiate Skier of the Year, won both the men's 10-km classic and 20-km freestyle races at the NCAA Championships in his first season at Utah. The wins were his first of the season. He finished on the podium six times during the year, including finishing second in the 20-km freestyle at the RMISA Championship and third in the 10-km classic at RMISA's. He also helped the Utah team finish second in the classic relay at the Seawolf Invite.
In addition to coaching Bergström to two NCAA titles, Holt had five athletes combine for nine All-America honors en-route to the Utes' 2017 NCAA Championship. Utah was the top-scoring Nordic team at the NCAA Championships.
Merete Myrseth earned a silver in the women's 5-km classic and fifth in the 15-km freestyle while
Martin Mikkelsen earned bronze in the classic. Holt was also named the RMISA Nordic Coach of the Year. She recently completed her eighth season as head Nordic coach at Utah. Holt has helped coach the Utes to six top-three finishes at the NCAA Championships and her skiers have brought home seven individual national titles and earned 17 podium finishes at NCAA's.
