PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – The University of Utah softball team suffered a 10-2 defeat to the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday evening on day two of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge at Nancy Almaraz Field in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
The Utes now own a 2024 record of 4-4.
Utah was the first team to dent home plate on Saturday, cobbling together a first-inning rally that began with a Leilani Melendez single. After an error put runners on first and third, Karlie Davison dropped an RBI single into left to plate the game's first run.
Unfortunately for the Utes, the Bulldogs responded with a three-run home run in the third and added four more runs in the fifth to build a 7-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Aliya Belarde nudged the Utes closer by blasting her second long ball of the season over the wall in right, but that would be her team's final tally of the night. Mississippi State pushed three more runs across in the sixth before a scoreless bottom of the inning brought the contest to an end.

The Utes will be in action in Mexico one more time, taking on UC San Diego on Sunday at 10 a.m. MT
