SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Soccer announced the addition of seven new student-athletes for the 2017 season today. The incoming Utes are LuLu Borges, SJ Edwards, Jessica Hixson, Zona Kinnaman, Demi Lopez, Tatum Thornton and Cameron Tingey.
"It's another great day for the Utes," head coach Rich Manning said. "We are excited for these young women, who get to celebrate the outstanding accomplishment of coming to a Pac-12 team, and we are excited for our program because we are adding a group of hard-working, talented and ambitious players that are passionate about soccer and about playing at the 'U'. I am fired up to have these players join our team this summer and I know our returnees and staff feel the same way!"
Livia "LuLu" Borges – Midfielder/Defender – Layton, Utah – La Roca – Layton HS
A two-time all-state honoree in 5A, Borges scored 17 goals this past season for Layton HS. She helped lead the Lancers to a state quarterfinal and was named a Utah all-star in the fall by TeamSnap. With La Roca, she was a three-time state cup champion as well as a 2016 regional champion and national semifinalist.
She is the daughter of Wayne and Carrieann Borges and has a sister, Grace. Both her parents and sister were collegiate athletes. LuLu plans to major in health promotion and education and was an Honor Roll student at Layton. She also played basketball and was named an all-state performer while leading the Lancers to a 2016 state championship.
Borges on Utah: "I've always been a Utah fan and I loved the coaching staff and the environment. The campus is gorgeous and I wanted to live in the city. There is a lot to do and it just felt right."
Manning on Borges: "LuLu is a physical player that also has soft feet and reads the game well. She plays both sides of the ball well and is very good in the air. She is capable of playing in the midfield or on the back row. She is a great competitor that has been successful in both soccer and basketball."
SaraJean "SJ" Edwards – Goalkeeper - Albany, Ore. – Crossfire United – West Albany HS
Edwards was the 2013 Oregon ODP Player of the Year and was invited to the 2014 ODP National Training Camp. She was also listed as one of TopDrawerSoccer's Best XI and invited to the Seattle combine.
She is the daughter of Lily and James and has a sibling, Matthew. SJ plans on majoring in biomedical engineering and was her school's valedictorian. She also won academic achievement awards for her work in algebra and calculus and volunteered at a special needs soccer camp, TopSoccer.
Edwards on Utah: "I chose the University of Utah because it's just a great fit for me. I have wanted to play in the Pac-12 ever since I was a little kid and the engineering program at Utah is one of the best out there. The sports and academics are impressive and I couldn't be happier about joining the Utes."
Manning on Edwards: "SJ has had an unusual journey to come to Salt Lake. She was a highly regarded goalkeeper during her early high school years and has battled a couple of serious knee injuries. She is highly regarded by coaches in the Pacific Northwest as both an excellent athlete and player of high character. She is smart with good technique and has battled hard to get back on the field. She will bring quality to our already strong group of goalkeepers."
Jessica Hixson – Defender - Englewood, Colo. – Colorado Storm – Grandview HS
Hixson, an all-state performer, scored the game winner in the championship match and has 34 goals to go with 18 assists entering her senior season. The two-time state champion has also helped her club team Colorado Storm capture a 2012 state title, 2013 NPL championship and a 2015 ECNL national playoff berth.
She is the daughter of Anna and had a sibling, Bryant, who passed away. A Young Life leader, honor roll student and part of the leadership council at her high school, Jessica also volunteered at Food Bank of the Rockies and helped feed the homeless. She plans on majoring in psychology.
Hixson on Utah: "Utah won me over because it has great coaches, is close to home and is a really outstanding school."
Manning on Hixson: "Jessica is a big, strong player. We noticed her long passes, shots, tough tackles and aerial presence right away. As we watched more and asked about her, we also saw and heard about her good touch and soccer mind. She can play multiple positions and will bring a physical presence."
Zona Kinnaman – Defender - Nampa, Idaho – Boise Nationals – Columbia HS
Kinnaman was an all-conference selection after amassing 60 goals and 25 assists in her high school career. Now suiting up at center back, she was named Team and Defensive MVP. Her club team Boise Nationals, won the state championship in 2015 and '16 and was a three-time Performance Cup champion. Named one of the most improved players at inter-regional camp, she was invited and named to the Region IV ODP team.
She is the daughter of Dawn and Scott and has two siblings, Alex and Hailey. The captain of the track team, Zona finished fifth in the state for the high jump. An honor roll student, a Young Life leader and member of the art club, she plans to major in health promotion and education
Kinnaman on Utah: "I chose Utah because Coach Manning really took an interest in me. I love the location and what the school has to offer me in terms of my major as well as affording me the ability to play soccer at a high level."
Manning on Kinnaman: "Zona is a strong defender. She is excellent in 1v1 situations, tackles well, and has good pace. She has improved her passing and build-up play and shown great development, especially at the ODP level. We love her athletic background in both soccer and track."
Demi Lopez – Midfielder - Logan, Utah – La Roca – Logan HS
The MVP of 3A, Lopez was a first-team all-state performer after amassing 35 goals and 23 assists during her time at Logan HS. Lopez played club with La Roca along with fellow Utes
Haylee Cacciacarne and
Eden Jacobsen.
She is the daughter of Erik and Ann and has eight siblings, Karly, Whitney, Anna, Mia, Carter, Kolby, Ethan and Bryson. An honor roll student who has competed in half marathons, Lopez is recovering from a torn ACL
Lopez on Utah: "I chose to attend Utah because it is the best school in the state."
Manning on Lopez: "Demi is an excellent all-around midfielder. She plays with skill and vision on offense and she covers ground, tackles and heads it on defense. We like her competitive spirit and feel for the game. She is coming back strong from injury and we look forward to seeing her back on the field."
Tatum Thornton –Defender - Sammamish, Wash. – Crossfire Premier – Eastlake HS
An All-KingCo Conference selection, Thornton played on the right side of the midfield. She scored 10 goals to pace the team and assisted on six this past season. With CrossFire United, she won Mountain Division, Northwest Conference and ECNL Champions League titles at the U-14 through U-17 levels. She also played in Region IV ODP from 2014-16 and was asked to play against Italian side AS Roma this past summer.
She is the daughter of Julie and Matt and has three siblings, Devon, Mattison and Taige. While at Eastlake, Tatum also served as a peer tutor for those with special needs while working on the yearbook and with the leadership council. An honors student, she earned scholar-athlete awards as a junior and senior. Tatum plans on majoring in marketing or entrepreneurship
Thornton on Utah: "I chose Utah because of Coach Manning and rest of the coaching staff. I can tell they want me to succeed not only as an athlete but also as a student. The school provides the perfect mix of strong academics and competitive soccer. Playing in the Pac-12 has always been a goal of mine, and achieving that dream is an unreal feeling. I can't wait to be a student-athlete at such an amazing school in such a beautiful city."
Manning on Thornton: "Tatum is a well-rounded, steady outside defender. She is a good athlete and makes it difficult on the opposing team's attackers both individually and in team concepts. She is also composed on the ball and can help the team build an attack from the back row. She has good leadership qualities and is an outstanding competitor."
Cameron Tingey – Defender - Sammamish, Wash. – Eastside FC – Skyline HS
Tingey helped Eastside FC garner three state titles, two regional championships and a national title. She also helped Skyline HS capture four KingCo championships. This year, the team finished third in the state as Tingey scored six goals and doled out five assists and earned her second KingCo all-conference honor. She also served as captain of her ODP team for two seasons and trained with the U.S. team at Washington
She is the daughter of MacKay and Shelly, both BYU graduates, and has two siblings, Sydne and Kian. Cameron plans to major in biology after tutoring in that subject, as well as math. A National Honor Society and LEAP Club member with a 4.0 gpa, she also assists her dad at his orthodontics practice.
Tingey on Utah: "I chose Utah because of it's outstanding location, the great coaching staff and players, the tradition of the soccer program and the fantastic academics offered."
Manning on Tingey: "Cameron is a fast, physical outside defender. Her speed and toughness make it hard for forwards to get by her. She gets forward with pace as well. She is comfortable on the left side. We have been impressed with her competitive spirit and character."
