ORLANDO, Fla. - A pair of first half goals by the UCF Golden Knights proved to be too much to overcome for the University of Utah women's soccer team, as the Utes suffered a 2-0 defeat on Thursday night in Big 12 Conference action at the UCF Soccer Complex in Orlando, Fla.
Utah is now 5-5-3 in 2025 with an 0-2-2 conference mark.
"I really feel for our players tonight," said coach
Hideki Nakada. "I thought we outplayed UCF, created numerous chances, and limited them to very little, yet we still found ourselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard, which is tough to take. That said, I believe we're just one result away from building real momentum and we'll give everything we have to make that happen on Sunday at Houston."
Utah put the pressure on early, as the night's first three shots on goal all came from the visitors. Two of opportunities included shots by
Grace Watkins. The first came following an excellent run by
Shannon Davidson in which she outmaneuvered the nearest defender on the attacking side of the field before finding Watkins inside the box, but the graduate midfielder's shot went just wide. Moments later, a cross from
Ali Swensen found Watkins just outside the six-yard box, only for her redirection on net to be saved by the keeper.
Despite those chances, the home team opened the scoring in the 24th minute.
Ava Hetzel was whistled for a foul inside the box, setting up a penalty kick that
Honoka Hamano capitalized on for a 1-0 lead. In the 32nd minute, UCF added to its lead when a Utah turnover inside their own 18 resulted in a score for Liz Worden.
Utah's quest to get back in the game in the second half included another on-target shot from Watkins in the 61st minute that was turned away. In the 81st minute, a
Lilliah Blum shot from the left side of the box nearly trickled over the goal line, but it glanced off the keeper and ended up just wide. Over the final 45 minutes, the Utes managed 11 total shots, but they were unable to cut into their deficit.
