SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah football program took to the Utah baseball practice field today, completing its ninth practice of fall camp. The Utes donned just helmets and shoulder pads to enter the second full week of camp.

With temperatures in the mid-80s, the Utes enjoyed a day away from the sweltering heat. Hot or not, the Utes have continued to show strong team chemistry during camp, evident today by the defense who stepped up by forcing multiple turnovers. Â

Media Observation Highlights…
• Sophomore John Penisini had a strong stop at the line of scrimmage that would have counted for loss of yards.
• Philip Afia, Julian Blackmon, Kenric Young all recorded interceptions.
• Pita Tonga broke through the offensive line to put pressure on the quarterback, forcing a throwaway.
• Tyler Huntley scrambled to the outside to complete a pass to Jameson Field for a one-handed catch and a first down.
• Tyler Huntley received top-notch blocking from Lowell Lotulelei for a first down rushing play up the middle.
• Troy Williams threw for a 10-plus yard touchdown to Bronson Boyd … touchdown was scored on a one-handed catch.

Post-Practice Thoughts with head coach Kyle Whittingham…

On how practice went today…
"Things are still going well. We are in the first day of what feels like camp. We moved into the hotel and in the dorms, so it has more of a camp routine feel. Summer school is over with, we don't have classes to work around so it is all football now for the next two weeks. We had a good practice today and a good walk through this morning. We have been seeing improvement with every practice, which is what needs to happen. We still have a long way to go. Defense is probably further along than the offense right now, but that is to be expected. I think we are going to be pretty good on defense and when it is all said and done, we will have a pretty stout defense, but right now I think we are in pretty good shape."

On the secondary's performance during camp…
"I've been bragging on them since the first practice. They are starting to make plays. Julian Blackmon, Corrion Ballard, Terrell Burgess, all of those guys back there are very talented, they just need experience, which is what we are giving them right now."

On if he is seeing an separation in the secondary position battle…
"Nothing is defined yet, but we are starting to see some separation across the board with the whole football team."

On the offensive linemen switching positions on the line…
"Unfortunately, we haven't been able to play with the same five due to guys being unavailable for practice. So, it has been a little bit of a makeshift situation that needs to get settled pretty soon. We still have time, but we are trying to find the best five out there and of those five, the best combination of where those guys fit."

On the centers' performance in camp so far…
"They are improving. We miss Lo, no doubt about that, but the guys that are out there are improving and getting invaluable experience. They may be called upon. Last year we were down to our fourth or fifth center, so you never know and you can never have too many guys that can play that position. You better be ready because if you can't get the ball to the quarterback, nothing else matters."

On Darren Carrington's waiver becoming official today…
"We are excited about Darren. Obviously, he is a guy that can help us this year and will figure into our plans prominently."

On the number of offensive linemen he'd like to see rotate this year…
"If we could get 10, that would be ideal. Very rarely do we have 10 guys that we feel are all ready to play in a football game. Obviously, eight would be the bare minimum, but 10 would be ideal."

On what he has seen from Darren Carrington so far in practice…
"He has the frame, he has the great ability to go up and get the contested ball, he has exceptional hands, runs very clean routes and he has great body control. He is a guy that fits very well into Troy Taylor's plans."Â
